Hodinkee Shop

The retail and pre-owned arm of Hodinkee, the watch media and editorial platform. Sells new authorised-dealer watches, vintage pieces, accessories, and Hodinkee-branded watches and straps. Editorial-led commerce model that influences mainstream collector taste.

The Hodinkee Shop is the retail and pre-owned arm of Hodinkee, the New York-based watch media and editorial platform founded in 2008 by Benjamin Clymer. The Shop launched in 2010 and has grown into a hybrid retailer combining new authorised-dealer-purchased watches, vintage curation, accessories, and Hodinkee-branded products (straps, books, special editions).

What Hodinkee Shop sells

Three main categories:

  • New watches as an authorised dealer for selected brands. Hodinkee Shop has held dealer accounts at various times with brands including Cartier, Grand Seiko, MB&F, Nomos Glashütte, Oris, TAG Heuer, and Tudor. The roster shifts over time and not every brand listed historically is currently in the Shop.
  • Vintage watches curated by the editorial team. Each vintage piece comes with detailed editorial content covering the reference's history, the specific example's condition, and provenance.
  • Hodinkee-branded straps, accessories, and limited editions — collaborations with brands on small-batch references with Hodinkee-specific dial designs or specifications.

Editorial-led commerce

Hodinkee's unusual position is that its retail is integrated with its editorial output:

  • Editorial articles about watch history, micro-brand discoveries, and market commentary build long-term reader trust.
  • Shop listings are linked from editorial content where relevant, with the editorial cohort vouching for the references.
  • Collaboration limited editions (Hodinkee × Omega Speedmaster, Hodinkee × G-Shock, Hodinkee × Vacheron, etc.) sell out rapidly and trade above retail on secondary markets.

The model has influenced what other watch media outlets attempt (Bring a Watch, Hairy Pants, Worn & Wound merch) but few have replicated the integrated scale.

Market position

Hodinkee Shop occupies a curatorial mid-tier:

  • Lower volume than Chrono24 or platform retailers.
  • Higher trust signal than most independent dealers because of the editorial backing.
  • Higher prices than competing dealers for equivalent vintage references — buyers pay a curation and editorial premium.
  • Vintage authenticity is generally well-vetted but not infallible; like all curated vintage marketplaces, occasional listings have been revised after community feedback.

Implications for dealers

For working watch dealers, Hodinkee Shop is:

  • A reference point for premium-curated vintage pricing — Hodinkee asking prices anchor the upper-mid tier for similar references.
  • A competitor in some categories (vintage Omega Speedmaster, certain Grand Seiko, vintage Cartier).
  • An occasional source for new authorised-dealer purchases of brands where the dealer does not have a direct AD relationship.
  • A media influence — Hodinkee editorial coverage of a reference can lift secondary-market pricing in the following weeks; tracking Hodinkee article subjects is part of basic market intelligence.
