Patek Philippe is a Swiss luxury watchmaker founded in Geneva in 1839 by Antoni Patek and François Czapek (later joined by Jean Adrien Philippe). It remains family-owned (Stern family) and produces approximately 60,000 watches per year, small by Swiss luxury standards, large by ultra-high-end measures.

Position in the market

Patek occupies the apex of mainstream Swiss luxury watchmaking, alongside Audemars Piguet and Vacheron Constantin. Its catalogue spans dress watches, complications, sports models, and high-complication pieces with grand and minute repeaters, perpetual calendars, and tourbillons.

Key collections

  • Nautilus: sports-luxury icon designed by Gérald Genta, launched 1976. References 5711/1A, 5712/1A, 5990/1A are among the most-traded watches in the market.
  • Aquanaut: sports-rubber-strap line, more contemporary. References 5167A, 5168G.
  • Calatrava: round dress watch family. The 5196 and 5226 are the simple classics.
  • Grand Complications: multi-complication pieces (minute repeater, perpetual calendar, split-seconds). References 5970, 5208P, 5270P.
  • Twenty-4: women's collection.
  • World Time: second-time-zone display.

Reference numbering

Patek references read as base model plus variant: 5711/1A-014. The base is the model, the suffix the bracelet and material code, and the final digits the dial configuration. Material codes: A (steel), R (rose gold), G (white gold), P (platinum), J (yellow gold).

Auction presence

Patek dominates high-end watch auctions. Sotheby's, Christie's, and Phillips routinely auction Patek references at six- and seven-figure prices. The discontinued 5711/1A-014 (Nautilus, steel, black-blue gradient dial, 2021-2022) traded at multiples of retail.

On the secondary market

Discontinuation of a popular reference (5711/1A in 2021, 5167A in 2022) sends prices to multiples of MSRP. The Stern family controls supply tightly. For dealers, Patek inventory is illiquid relative to Rolex but commands higher margins per piece when it does move.
