A. Lange & Söhne is a German luxury watchmaker founded in 1845 in Glashütte, Saxony, by Ferdinand Adolph Lange. Production was suspended in 1948 after East German nationalisation. Refounded in 1990 by Walter Lange and Günter Blümlein after German reunification. Owned by Richemont since 2000.
Geographic and stylistic identity
Lange is the rare non-Swiss brand at the top of mainstream luxury watchmaking. Its style is distinct: three-quarter plate movements (unlike the bridge-architecture of most Swiss houses), hand-engraved balance cocks (signed by the engraver), German silver as a base material, blued screws and gold chatons.
Key models
- Lange 1 (1994): the asymmetric dial with off-centre hours/minutes, oversize date (Großdatum) at top right, power reserve indicator at bottom right, sub-seconds at lower left. The model that re-established the brand. References 101.032, 191.032, and the modern 191.039.
- Saxonia: round dress watches with the cleanest possible dial. Saxonia Thin (40mm, 5.9mm thick) is the line's anchor.
- Datograph: chronograph with flyback, jumping minute counter, and the iconic Lange Großdatum. References 403.035, 405.035, 405.031.
- 1815: round watches named after Ferdinand Adolph Lange's birth year, the most traditional in styling.
- Zeitwerk: digital jumping-hours and jumping-minutes display.

The Großdatum
Lange's oversize date display (Großdatum) is the brand's signature complication. Two adjacent discs (one for tens, one for units) show the date in a window two to three times larger than a standard date. It is a Glashütte heritage element traced back to the 19th-century Semper Opera House clock in Dresden.
Market position
Lange occupies the same tier as Patek Philippe at the top of mainstream luxury but with substantially smaller annual production (~5,000-6,000 pieces estimated). The Datograph and Zeitwerk are the most-collected references; vintage Lange 1 launch references (1994-1998) command six-figure auction prices.
Allocation at authorised dealers is limited but less constrained than Patek Nautilus / AP Royal Oak. Secondary market premiums exist but are modest by sports-luxury standards.
