The Lange 1 is A. Lange & Söhne's flagship reference, introduced in 1994 as the brand's relaunch piece after German reunification. Designed by Günter Blümlein and Reinhard Meis, it broke from Swiss design convention with an asymmetric off-centre dial layout that has become one of the most distinctive watch designs of the modern era.
Dial layout
The Lange 1's signature is its asymmetric off-centre dial:
- Hours and minutes in a sub-dial at upper left, off-centre.
- Oversized date (Großdatum) at upper right — inspired by the famous five-minute clock at Dresden's Semperoper opera house.
- Power reserve indicator (Auf/Ab) at lower right, showing 72-hour reserve.
- Small seconds sub-dial at lower left.
The composition forms a non-overlapping arrangement — every element has its own clearly delineated space, with no two indicators occupying the same area. This is mathematically uncommon in watch design and is one of the elements that makes the Lange 1 immediately identifiable.
Movement and execution
The original Lange 1 uses caliber L901, a manual-wind movement with twin mainspring barrels for the 72-hour power reserve. Visible features include:
- Three-quarter plate in German silver (untreated maillechort) — a defining Glashütte tradition.
- Hand-engraved balance cock by an in-house specialist; each engraving signed.
- Gold chatons secured by blued screws holding the jewels.
- Anglage (hand-bevelled edges) on every visible movement component.
The level of hand-finishing is among the highest in series production luxury watchmaking, exceeded only by independent makers and Patek Philippe's Grand Complications.
