Jewels (Lagersteine)

Synthetic ruby or sapphire bearings inserted into a mechanical watch movement at points of friction and pivot rotation. Reduce wear, friction, and maintenance needs. Jewel count (17, 21, 31, etc.) is sometimes printed on the dial or movement.

Jewels (German Lagersteine or Steine) are synthetic ruby or sapphire bearings inserted into a mechanical watch movement at points of friction and pivot rotation. They reduce wear, friction, and maintenance needs compared with bare metal-on-metal bearings.

What jewels do

A typical mechanical movement has rotating pivots (the ends of wheel arbors) that turn many times per day — the seconds wheel turns once per minute, the fourth wheel and minute wheel slower, the balance staff oscillates 28,800 times per hour. Metal pivots running in metal bores would wear quickly. Hard synthetic ruby (Al₂O₃ with chromium impurities, mohs 9) is one of the few materials harder than steel, and ruby bearings allow steel pivots to run for decades without measurable wear.

The same material — manufactured as synthetic crystal since 1902 (Verneuil process) — is used for the watch crystal on premium watches, but in jewels the ruby is shaped into small precision bearings rather than a flat disc.

Where jewels go

A modern mechanical watch movement typically has 17 to 31 jewels distributed across:

  • Going-train pivots (wheel-end bearings). Each wheel uses two jewels (upper and lower pivot bearings).
  • Balance staff with two jewels at each end (plus impulse jewel on the roller table and escape-wheel jewels on the pallet fork).
  • Pallet fork (anchor) with end-stones and pallet jewels.
  • Escape wheel with pivots.
  • Date and complication trains add more.

The classic three-hand watch with no complications uses about 17 jewels. A chronograph adds maybe 4 to 8 more depending on layout. Perpetual calendars and complicated movements can reach 50+ jewels.

Jewel count and quality

A higher jewel count does not always mean a better movement. Within a given price tier, jewel count is mostly a function of complication. Compare:

  • ETA 2824-2 (basic Swiss automatic): 25 jewels.
  • Rolex caliber 3235 (modern Submariner / Datejust movement): 31 jewels.
  • Patek Philippe caliber 240 PS (micro-rotor): 27 jewels.
  • Lange L901 (Lange 1): 53 jewels.
  • Patek Philippe Sky Moon Tourbillon caliber RTO 27 QR SI: 55 jewels.

Marketing-driven inflated jewel counts (e.g., adding non-functional decorative jewels) were a 1960s-1970s problem and largely don't exist in current production. Modern jewel counts are functional.

Dealer-relevant notes

  • Functional jewels are invisible in normal operation. A buyer should not be impressed by a high jewel count alone.
  • Damaged jewels (chipped, cracked) require movement service. Visible only under loupe or microscope.
  • Aftermarket-replaced jewels in vintage service work can be a Frankenwatch signal. Original-spec ruby jewels age uniformly; out-of-period replacements differ slightly in colour and finish.
  • Jewel count on the dial is mostly a vintage tradition. Modern luxury watches rarely print jewel count on the dial (Rolex, Patek, AP do not; Omega and some others occasionally do).
