The Royal Oak is Audemars Piguet's sports-luxury watch family, designed by Gérald Genta and launched in 1972. It was the first true luxury steel sports watch, priced at the time at multiples of contemporary dress watches in gold. The reaction at launch was mixed; the watch eventually became one of the most recognised pieces in modern horology and created the category that the Patek Nautilus joined four years later.
Design
Genta's signature elements:
- Octagonal bezel with eight hexagonal screws visible on the front.
- Integrated bracelet flowing seamlessly from the case.
- "Tapisserie" or "Grande Tapisserie" dial: a small-grid hobnail-like texture, generated by hand or machine engraving.
- Round case-back beneath the octagonal bezel (the case underneath is round; the octagonal shape is on the bezel only).
The Jumbo 5402ST (1972) was 39 mm, extraordinary for the period when dress watches were typically 32-34 mm.

Material variants
The Royal Oak exists in steel, yellow gold, rose gold, white gold, platinum, titanium, and ceramic. The black ceramic Royal Oak (26579CE) is a recent (2017+) introduction. Frosted gold (the texture by Carolina Bucci) appears on certain anniversary editions.
Market position
The 41 mm steel Royal Oak references (15500ST, 15510ST, 26331ST, 26574ST) are among the hardest-to-acquire production luxury watches in the world. Allocation through authorised dealers is severely limited; secondary market premiums run 1.8x to 3x retail depending on reference.
Discontinuation news historically spikes a reference's secondary value. The 15202ST "Jumbo" approximately doubled when discontinued in 2022.
