Steuerberater (Tax advisor)
A licensed German tax advisor authorised to represent businesses and individuals before tax authorities. For watch dealers, typically prepares the annual tax filings, advises on tax-scheme decisions, and represents during a Betriebsprüfung.
A Steuerberater is a licensed German tax advisor (StB) authorised under the Steuerberatungsgesetz to represent businesses and individuals before tax authorities. The profession is regulated by the Steuerberaterkammer and carries personal liability for tax advice given. For working watch dealers, a Steuerberater is the most important external relationship after the dealer's own bank.
What a Steuerberater does for a watch dealer
Three layers of typical engagement:
- Routine bookkeeping and filings. Monthly bookkeeping data goes from the dealer (via DATEV or similar interface) to the Steuerberater. The Steuerberater files Umsatzsteuer-Voranmeldungen, prepares year-end statements (Jahresabschluss or Einnahmen-Überschuss-Rechnung), and submits income-tax, trade-tax, and corporation-tax filings.
- Advisory. Decisions like Regelbesteuerung vs Differenzbesteuerung, how to structure a partnership, when to incorporate (UG/GmbH/AG), how to handle a high-value transaction, and ongoing GwG compliance. The advice is documented and forms part of the audit defence.
- Representation in audits. During a Betriebsprüfung, the Steuerberater communicates with the auditor on the dealer's behalf, prepares responses to questions, negotiates findings, and (where needed) escalates to the Einspruchsverfahren (appeal procedure).
Cost structure
Steuerberater fees in Germany are regulated by the Steuerberatervergütungsverordnung (StBVV), which defines fee scales based on the volume and complexity of work. Typical annual cost for a small to medium watch dealer:
- Monthly bookkeeping: €200 to €600 per month depending on transaction volume.
- Annual financial statement: €1,500 to €5,000.
- Income-tax and trade-tax filings: €500 to €1,500.
- VAT special audit or Betriebsprüfung representation: €100 to €200 per hour.
For a dealer running €2 million annual revenue, total annual Steuerberater cost is typically €8,000 to €15,000.
Specialised vs general Steuerberater
Most Steuerberater are generalists serving SMEs across sectors. For watch dealers, specific expertise areas that matter:
- § 25a UStG (Differenzbesteuerung) practical experience.
- Cross-border trade (intra-community, exports, import VAT recovery).
- High-value-goods compliance including GwG.
- Inventory valuation for high-priced single-asset items.
A generalist Steuerberater can manage routine work but may not catch margin-scheme nuances. Several Steuerberater firms in Munich, Frankfurt, and Berlin specialise in luxury-goods and watch-trade clients. Migration to a specialist costs effort (handover of records, settling old engagement) but often pays back within one or two filing cycles.
When to engage a Steuerberater
In Germany, Buchführungspflicht (mandatory bookkeeping) applies above defined revenue and profit thresholds. Below those thresholds, a sole proprietor can technically self-file. For watch dealers, the practical answer is: from day one of commercial activity. The cost of compliance mistakes (back-tax, interest, possible criminal exposure under § 370 AO) dwarfs the cost of advisor fees.
