COSC
The Contrôle officiel suisse des chronomètres, the Swiss official chronometer certification institute. Tests movement accuracy to ISO 3159 standard and issues "Chronometer" certifications used as a quality marker on dial text.
COSC (Contrôle officiel suisse des chronomètres) is the Swiss official chronometer certification institute. Founded in 1973 and based in Le Locle, it tests watch movements to the ISO 3159 chronometer standard and issues certifications used by manufacturers as a dial-text quality marker ("Superlative Chronometer", "Officially Certified Chronometer").
What COSC certifies
COSC testing is performed on movements only, not complete watches. Each movement is tested over 15 days under controlled conditions:
- Five positions (dial up, dial down, crown left, crown up, crown down).
- Three temperatures (8°C, 23°C, 38°C).
- Seven measured criteria, all of which must pass.
The headline criterion is average daily rate, which must fall between -4 to +6 seconds per day for a chronometer-certified mechanical movement. Other criteria include positional variation, isochronism, and rate change with temperature.
A passing movement receives a numbered chronometer certificate. The manufacturer typically integrates the movement into a watch and adds "Chronometer" wording on the dial.
Brands that use COSC
- Rolex sends every mechanical movement through COSC. The dial text "Officially Certified Chronometer" is universal across Rolex. Rolex then performs its own additional in-case testing ("Superlative Chronometer, Officially Certified" since 2015) which is stricter than the COSC test alone (-2 to +2 seconds per day in-case).
- Omega certifies most modern movements through COSC plus its own METAS Master Chronometer process for current sport watches.
- Breitling, Tudor, Panerai, TAG Heuer, and many other Swiss brands routinely COSC-certify select references.
Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, and Vacheron Constantin maintain their own internal certifications rather than using COSC.
What COSC does NOT test
- The cased-up watch. Only the bare movement. Once installed in a case, accuracy may differ from the bench test.
- Water resistance. A separate manufacturer-side test.
- Power reserve.
- Shock resistance.
- Long-term reliability. The 15-day window is short.
Practical relevance for dealers
For modern watches, COSC certification is a quality signal but rarely a price differentiator on its own — most premium brands certify routinely, so it's effectively baseline. Where it does matter:
- Vintage references with COSC certificates (1970s, 1980s) carry extra provenance weight because the certificate accompanies the watch as documentation.
- Non-COSC mechanical references in a brand that usually certifies prompts questions: was this a service-replaced movement, or a non-chronometer variant?
- COSC paperwork belongs in the full set when the watch shipped with one.
