LNIB (Like New In Box)

LNIB stands for "Like New In Box". It describes a pre-owned watch that has been worn so little that, under normal inspection, it looks identical to a brand-new piece. Box, papers, and accessories are present.

What LNIB requires

The bar for LNIB is high but lower than NOS:

• No visible wear on the case, bracelet, or clasp under a loupe-free inspection. Hairline scratches under magnification can be acceptable depending on the dealer's strictness.
• No service marks on the case back or bracelet.
• Full set packaging: original box, warranty card, hangtags, all removed links, manual.
• Recently dated card or proof of light use is a plus but not strictly required.

A watch that is six months out of the AD, worn twice for special occasions, with no marks and the full set still complete, is the canonical LNIB.

Why LNIB versus NOS

NOS requires the watch to have never been worn at all. LNIB allows minimal wear that does not change the visual impression. For modern Rolex sports references the gap between LNIB and NOS pricing is small. For vintage references it widens because vintage NOS is a fundamentally different proposition.

Common dealer usage

LNIB has become the default condition claim for recent pre-owned watches on Chrono24 and dealer listings. Because the term is partly subjective, sharp buyers will ask:

• "How many times worn?"
• "Date the watch left the AD?"
• "Are removed links and stickers still present?"

A reputable dealer will answer all three. If a watch is described as LNIB but the seller hesitates on the wear-frequency question, the buyer should treat the listing as standard pre-owned, not LNIB.

Pricing impact

LNIB typically trades within 2 to 5 percent of a brand-new AD price for hot references, and at par with full-set retail for less-demanded references. For watches with an authorised dealer waiting list, LNIB can command a premium because there is no wait.
