Regulation (Regulierung)

The adjustment of a mechanical watch's rate to bring it within specification. Performed during or after a service by changing the effective length of the hairspring. A core competence of watchmakers; visible as the dealer's after-service quality signal.

Regulation (German Regulierung) is the adjustment of a mechanical watch's rate — how many seconds per day it gains or loses — to bring it within manufacturer specification or chronometer tolerance. It is one of the core skills of any qualified watchmaker and the visible after-service quality signal a dealer can offer.

How regulation works

Mechanical accuracy depends on the effective length of the hairspring. Shorter active length → faster rate. Longer active length → slower rate. Three adjustment mechanisms exist:

  • Regulator arm (older designs). A small lever on the balance bridge moves between markings (Fast/Slow, +/-, or numerical scale). Sliding it shifts the curb pins along the hairspring.
  • Free-sprung balance with weights or screws (modern Rolex, AP, high-end Patek). No regulator arm; the watchmaker adjusts tiny screws or weights on the balance wheel itself. More precise and less sensitive to shock.
  • Microstella adjustment (Rolex-specific). A free-sprung variant using star-shaped nuts at specific points on the balance, turned with a special tool.

A skilled watchmaker can regulate a watch to within ±2 seconds per day across positions on a free-sprung balance, ±5 to ±10 on an older regulator-arm movement.

When regulation is needed

  • After service. Reassembly disturbs the balance assembly; final regulation is the last step before reinstalling the dial.
  • After magnetisation. A magnetised movement runs fast by minutes per day. Regulation alone cannot fix it; demagnetisation must come first.
  • After shock. A drop or impact can shift the balance pivots or hairspring; the watch loses accuracy and needs both inspection and regulation.
  • Drift over time. Older mechanical movements drift slightly as oils age and parts wear. Regulation is needed every 5 to 7 years even without other intervention.

Multi-position regulation

A chronometer-grade regulation balances rate across multiple positions: dial up, dial down, crown left, crown up, crown down. Wrist-worn watches spend most time in dial-side positions, so dealers often request that the watchmaker prioritise dial-up and crown-down positions slightly over the others, mimicking actual wear.

The COSC and Master Chronometer certifications include strict multi-position tolerances. A watch passing those tests has been regulated to those standards as part of certification.

Dealer practice

For pre-owned watches before sale, the standard intake includes:

  • Rate measurement on a timegrapher across at least three positions.
  • If out of spec, regulation by the dealer's watchmaker before listing.
  • Documented results included with the sale (timegrapher screenshot or written log).

A buyer who receives a watch listed as "freshly regulated to +2 sec/day" with documentation is significantly more confident than one who receives a vague "running well" claim. Dealers who systematically regulate before sale build a reputation for after-sale reliability — fewer warranty claims, fewer returns.
