TAG Heuer is a Swiss watch manufacturer with roots dating to 1860, when Edouard Heuer founded the Heuer Watch Company in Saint-Imier. The brand has been associated with motorsport timekeeping for over a century — official timekeeper to Formula 1 and Indy 500 for various periods, dial-name partnerships with Ferrari, Porsche, McLaren, and Red Bull Racing. Acquired by Techniques d'Avant Garde (TAG) in 1985 (becoming TAG Heuer), and by LVMH in 1999.
Iconic models
- Carrera (introduced 1963, named after the Carrera Panamericana race). Heuer's foundational chronograph; current production from 38 to 44 mm in various complications.
- Monaco (introduced 1969). Square-cased chronograph; the first automatic chronograph (Caliber 11, developed with Breitling and Hamilton). Famously worn by Steve McQueen in the 1971 film Le Mans.
- Autavia (originally 1962, revived 2017). Aviation-and-automotive chronograph; the "AUT-AVIA" name combines automotive and aviation use.
- Aquaracer (introduced 2003). Dive watch line, 200 to 500 m water resistance.
- Connected (introduced 2015). Wear OS smartwatch line; an unusual brand bet on luxury smartwatches.
- Formula 1. Entry-level quartz chronograph line.
Carrera Heritage
The Carrera is TAG Heuer's foundational reference for collector demand. Vintage Carrera (1960s and 1970s) with manual-wind movements and clean dial layouts have a strong vintage collector base — the original 2447 in particular is a recognised vintage chronograph.
Modern Carrera releases include the in-house Heuer 02 chronograph caliber, with column-wheel and vertical clutch, introduced 2017.
Market position
TAG Heuer occupies the entry-luxury Swiss tier:
- Above Tissot, Longines, Mido (Swatch Group mid-market brands).
- Below Omega's flagships, IWC, Breitling's full luxury references.
- Competitive with Tudor and Oris in some categories.
The brand has experienced multiple repositioning cycles under LVMH. Recent years have seen a focus on heritage references (vintage-inspired Carrera and Monaco) and Connected smartwatches.
Pricing
- Carrera Chronograph 39 mm (in-house Heuer 02): retail around €5,800. Pre-owned: €4,000 to €4,800.
- Monaco Calibre 11 (modern reissue): retail around €6,500. Pre-owned: €4,500 to €5,500.
- Aquaracer Professional 300: retail €3,300 to €4,800. Pre-owned: €2,200 to €3,200.
- Vintage Carrera 2447 from 1960s: €8,000 to €25,000+ depending on condition and dial variant.
For dealers, TAG Heuer is an accessible-price-point inventory with steady demand. The vintage Carrera and Monaco market is more rewarding from a margin perspective than current production, where strong discounting from authorised dealers compresses secondary-market resale margins.
