Breitling
Swiss watch manufacturer founded in 1884 in Saint-Imier. Best known for aviation chronographs including the Navitimer, with its rotating slide-rule bezel for navigational calculations. Owned by CVC Capital Partners since 2017, repositioned upmarket under CEO Georges Kern.
Breitling is a Swiss watch manufacturer founded in 1884 by Léon Breitling in Saint-Imier. The brand's identity has been tied to aviation chronographs since the 1920s, when Breitling pioneered the wrist-worn chronograph with separate pushers for start, stop, and reset (a now-universal layout). Since 2017 Breitling has been owned by CVC Capital Partners and has been actively repositioned upmarket under CEO Georges Kern (formerly of IWC).
Iconic models
- Navitimer (introduced 1952). The aviation-focused chronograph with rotating slide-rule bezel for navigational calculations: airspeed, fuel consumption, time-distance computations. The most identifiable Breitling design.
- Chronomat (introduced 1984). Sport-luxury chronograph designed with input from the Italian Frecce Tricolori aerobatic team. Original "rouleaux" bracelet now refreshed for current production.
- Superocean (introduced 1957). Dive watch family covering 200 m to 2,000 m water resistance.
- Avenger. Larger sport chronographs, tougher case construction.
- Premier. Dressier non-aviation line revived under Georges Kern.
- Top Time. Vintage-inspired sport chronographs.
Repositioning under Georges Kern
The 2017 acquisition and Kern's leadership brought several strategic shifts:
- Reduction in catalogue breadth to focus on iconic references.
- In-house manufacture capacity expanded for the Breitling Manufacture caliber B01 chronograph movement (introduced 2009, expanded since).
- Boutique network expansion with reimagined retail aesthetic.
- Marketing pivot away from pure-aviation toward broader lifestyle positioning.
- Pre-owned programme launched, offering certified Breitling pre-owned pieces with manufacturer authentication and 2-year warranty.
The repositioning has lifted Breitling's brand perception but the resale market response has been mixed — current Breitling pricing has moved upmarket, but secondary-market values have not always followed at the same pace.
Market position
- Navitimer B01 Chronograph 43 in steel: retail around €9,500. Pre-owned: €6,500 to €7,800.
- Chronomat B01 42 / 44: retail €8,500 to €11,000. Pre-owned: comparable discount.
- Superocean Heritage 57: retail around €5,500. Pre-owned: €3,800 to €4,500.
For dealers, Breitling sits in an interesting middle position: higher-end than TAG Heuer, lower-end than Omega's flagships, with strong aviation-collector specialised demand for Navitimers. Vintage Navitimer references (especially 806 and 7806 from the 1960s-1970s) carry strong collector premiums.
Vintage Breitling authentication requires attention to dial printing, slide-rule calibration, and chronograph pushers — Navitimer-specific knowledge that not every general Swiss-watch dealer has.
