Hublot
Swiss watch manufacturer founded in 1980 by Carlo Crocco. Known for its "Art of Fusion" philosophy combining unusual materials (ceramic, sapphire, ceramic-tantalum), oversized cases, and high-volume marketing. Owned by LVMH since 2008. Polarising brand with strong celebrity tie-ins and a hot/not market cycle.
Hublot is a Swiss watch manufacturer founded in 1980 by Carlo Crocco in Nyon. The brand pioneered the combination of luxury metals with rubber (the original 1980 Hublot was a gold case on a rubber strap, then considered radical) and has expanded over four decades into one of the most aggressively marketed luxury watch brands. Owned by LVMH since 2008.
"Art of Fusion" identity
Hublot positions itself around the "Art of Fusion" — combining materials and technologies that don't traditionally appear together in luxury watches:
- Ceramic in various colours including the proprietary Magic Gold (gold/ceramic composite that is scratch-resistant, unusual for gold).
- Sapphire cases with full transparency, exposing the movement from every angle.
- King Gold and Magic Gold as proprietary precious-metal formulations.
- Carbon fiber, titanium, tantalum combined in single watches.
- Rubber straps as a brand signature, even on dress executions.
Iconic models
- Big Bang (introduced 2005). Hublot's most-recognised line: 44 mm chronograph with H-shaped screws on the bezel and complex case construction. Many sub-variants in different materials and movements.
- Classic Fusion (introduced 2010). Slimmer, more traditional Hublot proportions; competitive with mainstream luxury sport watches.
- Spirit of Big Bang (introduced 2014). Tonneau (barrel-shaped) Big Bang variant.
- Square Bang (introduced 2022). Square-case execution.
- MP Collection (Masterpiece). Limited-production complicated pieces; MP-10, MP-09, MP-05 LaFerrari.
Movement strategy
Hublot has progressively built in-house movement capacity:
- HUB1240 / HUB1242 Unico chronograph caliber, in-house since 2010. Visible from the dial side; column-wheel, integrated chronograph rather than modular.
- MHUB1280 Unico 2 updated variant.
- HUB6300 Tourbillon movements for MP-series.
Many Big Bangs and Classic Fusions still use modified Sellita or ETA base movements, particularly at lower price tiers.
Market position
Hublot's brand position is polarising:
- Cultural visibility is high — celebrity sponsorships (Usain Bolt, Pelé partnership, FIFA), football and Formula 1 tie-ins. Brand recognition rivals Rolex among non-watch-enthusiast buyers.
- Collector reception is mixed. Traditional watch collectors often consider Hublot over-marketed and over-priced relative to mechanical content. Hublot-specific collectors are passionate and focused.
- Secondary-market behaviour is volatile. Recent releases can spike then settle below retail; vintage Hublot (pre-2005) has thin trading volume.
Pricing
- Big Bang Unico 42 / 44 mm in titanium: retail around €18,500. Pre-owned: €12,000 to €15,000.
- Big Bang in ceramic or Magic Gold: retail €20,000 to €30,000.
- Classic Fusion in titanium 42 mm: retail around €8,500. Pre-owned: €5,500 to €7,000.
- Spirit of Big Bang in titanium: retail around €14,500.
For dealers, Hublot inventory has strong demand from a specific buyer profile but slower predictable turnover than Rolex or Patek. Margin discipline matters because pre-owned discounts versus retail can shift quickly.
