Warranty card (Garantiekarte)
The manufacturer's document recording reference number, serial number, dealer name, and date of original sale. The single most important provenance document for modern watches.
The warranty card (German Garantiekarte; Patek Philippe Origin; Cartier Certificat de Garantie) is the manufacturer's document recording the original sale of a watch. For modern watches it is the single most important provenance document.
What the warranty card records
A complete card includes:
- Reference number of the specific model.
- Serial number unique to the individual watch.
- Movement number for brands that print it separately (Patek Philippe).
- Dealer name and location (the authorised dealer who made the sale).
- Date of sale stamped or printed.
- Owner signature field (often unfilled in practice).
Modern cards from Rolex, Patek Philippe, and AP are credit-card-sized plastic with embedded security features (microprinting, holograms). Vintage cards are paper or thicker card stock with embossed seals.
Why the card carries value
The card is the verifiable bridge between the watch and the manufacturer's records:
- Authentication aid. A real card with correct printing and a known dealer stamp validates the watch as genuinely sold through the AD network.
- Era anchor. A dated card establishes the production window of the reference.
- Provenance step. The dealer name plus date is a paper trail point that can be cross-referenced with the manufacturer in some cases.
- Resale uplift. Box and papers status requires the card. Without it the watch drops to single watch.
Card fraud
Counterfeit cards exist in matched quality tiers to counterfeit watches:
- Crude cards with wrong fonts, wrong dealer formats, missing security features.
- Quality fakes that visually pass but fail under UV and magnification.
- Recycled real cards from a different reference, attempting to pass on a non-matching watch.
Verification for high-value transactions:
- Cross-check serial against the watch case.
- UV inspection for security printing.
- Dealer-name verification against the manufacturer's authorised-dealer list at the date printed.
- Direct verification with the manufacturer if the card is recent (Rolex, Patek, AP can sometimes confirm or deny in writing).
Digital cards
Rolex moved to digital warranty cards in 2020. Patek Philippe has retained physical Origin cards. Audemars Piguet uses both depending on the boutique. Digital cards carry equivalent provenance value in the long run but some collectors still discount slightly versus the older printed cards for nostalgic reasons.
