WTB (Want to Buy)

A buyer-side marketplace post indicating active interest in acquiring a specific reference, often with a target budget. The counterpart to WTS (Want to Sell).

WTB stands for "Want to Buy". It is the buyer-side shorthand used across watch forums, dealer chat groups, and marketplaces (Chrono24, Reddit r/Watchexchange, WatchUSeek for-sale section, dealer Telegram channels) to indicate that a buyer is actively looking for a specific reference.

What a WTB post contains

A well-formed WTB post is concise and includes:

  • Reference and optional preferred dial / bezel variant.
  • Condition tier required (full set, LNIB, box and papers minimum, etc.).
  • Budget range or a "fair offers" indication.
  • Location and shipping preferences.
  • Trust signals — links to past transactions or vouches.

Example: "WTB Rolex Submariner 126610LN, full set, max card date 2023, budget €10,500-€11,200, EU shipping."

Why dealers monitor WTB posts

WTB posts surface live demand. A dealer sourcing a watch can take inventory directly to a buyer at the open-market price, skipping the listing-and-wait cycle. For hot references with premium pricing, matching a fresh acquisition to a fresh WTB can shorten holding time from weeks to hours.

Most professional dealers maintain a private WTB list of recent client requests, organised by reference. When sourcing inventory, they cross-reference acquisitions against this list before listing publicly.

Risk on the buyer side

A WTB post advertises intent to spend money. Scam attempts target WTB posters:

  • Too-good-to-be-true offers from new sellers with no transaction history.
  • Off-platform payment requests to avoid platform protection (e.g., Chrono24 Trusted Checkout).
  • Stolen-watch laundering where sellers want to move a piece quickly without inspection.

Reputable dealers verify identity, request photos with watermarks and same-day timestamps, and prefer escrow or platform-protected payment.
