Rolex serial number lookup: a dealer's guide

Where the Rolex serial sits, what the letter prefixes say about the year, why random serials changed the check, and what a serial never proves.

The reference tells you what a Rolex is. The serial tells you which one. For a dealer the serial does three jobs: it dates the watch roughly, it ties the piece to its papers, and it is the number you check against stolen-watch registers before money moves.

Where to find it

  • Between the lugs at 6 o'clock. Older watches carry the serial here, under the bracelet end link. The reference sits between the lugs at 12.
  • On the rehaut. From the mid-2000s Rolex engraved the serial on the inner bezel ring, visible at 6 o'clock through the crystal. For some years both locations were used, then the lug engraving was dropped.

Removing the bracelet to read the lugs is routine at intake. Do it with the seller present, and photograph both numbers.

What the serial says about the year

Until about 1987 serials ran as plain numbers that climbed with production. Then Rolex added a letter prefix. The commonly used chart, approximate and with overlaps:

  • R 1987, L 1988 to 1989, E 1990, X and N 1991, C 1992, S 1993, W 1994 to 1995, T 1996, U 1997, A 1998 to 1999, P 2000, K 2001, Y 2002, F 2003 to 2004, D 2005, Z 2006, M 2007 to 2008, V 2008 to 2009, G 2010.

Around 2010 Rolex switched to random serials: eight characters, letters and digits, with no year encoded. For those pieces, the warranty card is the date. A watch sold without papers after 2010 cannot be dated from the serial alone.

Treat any serial chart as a range, not a fact. Rolex has never published one, and cases were stamped before they were sold, sometimes long before. The papers date the sale, the serial dates the case.

What a serial does not prove

  • Authenticity. Good fakes copy real serials. Correct font, depth and placement matter more than the number itself.
  • Originality. A genuine case can carry an aftermarket dial, bezel or movement. That is a Frankenwatch, and the serial will check out perfectly.
  • That the papers belong to it. Match the serial on the warranty card to the case, digit by digit. A full set with a mismatched card is not a full set.

The stolen-watch check

Before you pay, run the serial through a stolen-watch register such as The Watch Register and keep the result with the purchase. If the watch later turns out to be reported, that record helps show you bought in good faith.

Record it once, at intake

Most serial mistakes are typing mistakes: an O read as a 0, a missing digit, a serial written on the paper copy but not in the stock list. In ChronoDesk you add a watch from photos of the piece and its papers, and the serial is read for you along with reference and year. You confirm it, and from then on it is the same number on the Ankaufsrechnung, the listing and the sales invoice. On clear photos of the top 25 brands around 95% is read correctly, and you check every field before saving.

The reference is half the identity. If you want the other half to be clean too, our watch reference database covers 1,484 Rolex references in 58 families.

FAQ

Can I look up a Rolex serial number online?

You can estimate the production period of a pre-2010 serial from its prefix. Rolex does not offer a public serial lookup, and random serials after about 2010 carry no date.

Where is the serial on a modern Rolex?

On the rehaut, the inner ring between dial and crystal, at 6 o'clock. Older watches carry it between the lugs at 6.

Does a matching serial mean the watch is genuine?

No. It means the number is plausible. Authenticity comes from the case, dial, movement and papers checked together.
