Pre-owned
A watch that has had at least one previous owner. The umbrella term for the secondary market, covering everything from one-day-old "unworn" pieces to fifty-year-old vintage references.
Pre-owned is the umbrella term for any watch that has had at least one previous owner. It covers the full spectrum of the secondary market, from a watch bought yesterday and resold today, to a 1950s vintage piece that has changed hands a dozen times.
Why dealers prefer "pre-owned" over "used"
"Used" suggests wear and depreciation. "Pre-owned" carries the same information but reads as neutral and consistent with the luxury positioning the secondary market has cultivated. Major platforms (Chrono24, WatchBox, Bob's Watches) and authorised dealers' certified programmes all use pre-owned in their catalogue language.
In German, the equivalent terms are gebraucht (literal) and vorbesessen (translation of pre-owned). German dealers increasingly use Pre-Owned as a loanword, particularly in international listings.
Sub-tiers of pre-owned
Within pre-owned, condition tiers stack from highest to lowest:
- NOS — never sold, never worn, often unworn / stickered.
- LNIB — worn briefly, no visible wear, full set.
- Mint — light wear under careful inspection, full or partial set.
- Excellent — visible normal wear, often without all original accessories.
- Good — normal wear consistent with age, possible polishing history.
- Fair / Project — needs servicing or restoration before resale.
Certified pre-owned programmes
Several manufacturers now run certified pre-owned (CPO) channels: Rolex CPO (launched 2022), Audemars Piguet AP Certified, Vacheron Constantin Les Collectionneurs, IWC Certified Pre-Owned. Each programme adds:
- Manufacturer authentication.
- A new (usually two-year) warranty from the brand.
- Service to current factory standard, sometimes including replacement of worn components.
CPO watches trade at a premium over equivalent independent-dealer pre-owned because the warranty and brand-backed authentication reduce buyer risk. Some collectors argue the service step can replace original-condition components and prefer "untouched" pre-owned for that reason.
