Zenith

Zenith is a Swiss watch manufacturer founded in 1865 by Georges Favre-Jacot in Le Locle. The brand is most associated with the El Primero — one of the first automatic chronograph movements ever produced (introduced in 1969, in a three-way race with the Calibre 11 consortium of Heuer/Breitling/Hamilton and Seiko's 6139). The El Primero remains in production today and is supplied to several other brands (historically including Rolex Daytona until 2000).

El Primero significance

The El Primero is the watch industry's first 36,000 vph (5 Hz) automatic chronograph, faster than the Swiss standard of 28,800 vph. The higher beat rate gives:

• Tenth-of-a-second precision on the chronograph (the seconds hand moves at 1/10 second increments visible).
• Smoother sweep for the time-keeping seconds hand.
• Higher accuracy because the regulator runs at higher frequency, less susceptible to positional disturbance.

The original 1969 reference A386 with vertical clutch and integrated column-wheel chronograph remains the design template; current production El Primero pieces use the modern 4061/4069 calibers descended from the original.

Zenith is one of the few Swiss brands at the mid-luxury tier with full in-house movement production for time-only and chronograph references at all price levels. The 36,000 vph El Primero is a unique manufacture-grade movement at this price tier; most competitors offering chronographs in similar price bands use modified ETA/Sellita 7750 movements or rely on group-shared resources.

Market position

Zenith sits between TAG Heuer's accessible-luxury tier and Omega/IWC's premium-Swiss-luxury tier:

• Above TAG Heuer in mechanical content per dollar.
• Below Omega's hyped Speedmaster and Seamaster references in brand-recognition.
• Adjacent to Tudor in some categories, but more mechanical and less sport-watch-positioned.

The brand has experienced multiple positioning cycles under LVMH. Recent emphasis on heritage El Primero references and the Chronomaster Sport (with 1/10th second bezel scale and El Primero 3600 caliber) has stabilised brand identity.

For dealers, Zenith inventory has steady mechanical-collector demand. Margins are stable. The vintage El Primero market is well-defined and rewards depth of knowledge; modern Chronomaster turnover is moderate.
